A New Tradition
Last year, we planted our first garden in the backyard. It consisted of a pair of old desks we salvaged from the thrift store and turned on their side, then filled with dirt. We then planted a number of seedlings we got for free and were overwhelmed with tomatoes, banana peppers, bell peppers and even had a few unexpected things pop up from our compost pile. We learned quickly to save on water by collecting rain from the roof of the house and storing it in a couple of rubber trash cans we picked up for this purpose. Because the garden was such a success the first year, we decided to do a small garden every year.
The Tradition Continues
This year, we expanded. Our garden now has a number of plants from seedling plants as well as several vegetables we grew from seeds we purchased. We've also fenced off the garden area of the backyard to keep the dogs out. This year, we are trying: radishes, turnips, purple potatoes, a sweet potato plant, sunflowers, beets, squash, peas, pole beans, cucumbers, okra, tomatoes, cauliflower, basil, parsley...and it's still early in the season! I can't wait to share how this develops in the coming weeks in my blog.
